Future Relic Relaxation Lounge (FRRL-4047)
(2012)
The future isn’t shiny and virtual. It’s industrial, mechanical, and broken. Future technologies are built out of recycled parts from other outmoded objects and equipment.
Our relaxation lounge is set in this future.
It is installed in a departure lounge to provide relaxation to weary travellers, both local and interplanetary.
A pulsing ‘Online’ lightbox sign entices people to sit and relax in the chair so that it may run through a series of relaxation techniques introduced by the couch itself. Using a synthesised speech program the couch guides the sitter through the relation experience verbally.
This is a relaxation experience manufactured by the technology itself based on what it perceives to be relaxing using human archival footage as a reference. Unfortunately the FRRL-4047 often gets it wrong and the sitter is left bewildered and/or amused – not necessarily relaxed.
Future Relic Relaxation Lounge (FRRL-4047) began life as part of Couch World, a 4 day project to raise awareness for Human Rights Day, Produced by Multicultural Arts Victoria and Supported by the City of Melbourne, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, Signal and Arts Centre Melbourne. 06-10 December 2012.
